Conversion rate is goal completions divided by total visitors. What counts as a 'conversion' depends on the page: an opt-in on a squeeze page, a purchase on a sales page, a sign-up on a join page.
Why it matters to marketers
It's the number that ultimately decides whether a traffic source is profitable, not raw visitor counts. A safelist sending fewer, more engaged clicks can easily out-convert a traffic exchange sending ten times the hits — always compare sources by conversion rate, not volume alone.
