An upgrade (or paid tier) is a subscription level above the free membership on a traffic exchange, safelist, or mailer. Paid members typically get a faster credit-to-hit ratio, more daily allotted credits, priority ad placement, and sometimes exemption from having to view as many ads themselves.
Why it matters to marketers
Free membership is fine for testing a site, but the earn-to-spend ratio is usually stacked against free members on purpose. If a site is converting for you, upgrading is often the cheapest way to scale exposure without spending more surfing time — treat the monthly cost as ad spend and measure it against clicks or opt-ins, not against vague 'more traffic' promises.
