Definition

Sites use member spotlights to reward activity (top surfers, top referrers) or to sell premium exposure — either way, the spotlighted member gets visibility beyond their normal rotation share.

Why it matters to marketers

A spotlight slot is worth pursuing when it's earned through activity rather than purchased, since organic recognition slots often get more attention from engaged members than paid banner space does. Check whether a site's spotlight is merit-based or pay-to-play before counting on it as a strategy.
