A matrix limits how many people can go directly under each member (say, 3 or 5 wide) before new sign-ups 'spill over' to fill positions deeper in the structure. This is what distinguishes a downline builder from a plain referral program — placement is structured, not just a flat list.
Why it matters to marketers
Spillover means members can benefit from a busy upline's promotion even without recruiting themselves, which is the appeal downline builders advertise. It also means matrix position and timing matter — joining early in an active matrix is worth more than joining the same program months later.
